The two bays of Angra

Situated on the South part of Terceira island, Angra bay owns its notoriety to Mount Brazil, which gives protection and deepness to its sea shore.
Etymologically, “Angra” means little bay, and the name was attributed immediately on the act of the discovery of the islands.

The picture of Mount Brazil and the plant, both show the characteristics of the bay, perfect for what was needed on the middle of the XV century, specifically, the creation of a port-of-call serving the enterprise of the maritime discoveries.
Angra through Linschoten art gives an idea of the functions being attributed to this city for about three centuries.

Behind it, it is possible to see the other bay, “Fanal” on the opposite side of Angra, which was used whenever the winds blew from Southeast (the only ones to affect the ships anchored there).
